Our Testing Methodology
We evaluated 12 canned chicken brands across five criteria: protein content per ounce, sodium per serving, texture after draining, ingredient list simplicity, and value per gram of protein. Each was tasted plain, in a simple salad preparation, and cooked in a skillet to evaluate how they perform across different use cases.
#1: Wild Planet Organic — Best Overall Premium
Wild Planet's organic roasted chicken leads the premium tier with the cleanest texture of any canned chicken we tested — it shreds into long, natural-looking pieces rather than the small, crumbly bits common in cheaper brands. The ingredient list is three items: chicken, sea salt, chicken broth. Sodium is modest at 270mg per serving.
#2: Kirkland Signature (Costco) — Best Value
Kirkland's chunk chicken is the gold standard for value. At roughly $2.25 per 12.5 oz can when purchased in the 6-pack, it offers excellent protein density and a clean, white meat texture. Sodium is moderate at 310mg. For meal preppers going through several cans a week, this is the obvious choice.
#3: Swanson Premium — Best Widely Available
Found in virtually every American grocery store, Swanson White Premium Chunk Chicken is the reliable middle-ground option. It's a touch saltier than our top picks (380mg), but the texture is consistent and it performs well in cooked applications like casseroles, soups, and stir-fries.
Brands to Avoid
Several store-brand options in our testing had notably inferior texture — very fine, almost paste-like chicken that performed poorly in any recipe where texture mattered. Always check sodium if that's a concern: some brands hit 500mg+ per serving, which adds up quickly when using 2–3 cans in a recipe.
